Gardeners can begin pruning heavily in the June-July months when plants have entered dormancy.

Unclean or rusty tools simply cannot do the gardening jobs you need them to. Take time before and after pruning jobs to care for your tools.

Clean secateurs blades using steel wool and soapy water to remove rust or plant sap build up. Using a disinfectant, like Felco® Lubricant Spray, further protects blades from developing rust or spreading disease.

Cut on a 45° angle, upward and away from the bud to prevent disease. Bigger cuts need to be sealed using a paint or spray-on pruning compound. Further prevent disease spread by disinfecting your tools plant-to-plant using Felco® Lubricant Spray.

Pruning is the perfect time to train climbers to your pergola or other supports. Use plant ties to cling the plant to the support, tying the thread loosely. Over- tightening threads can girdle the branches.
